Proust Legal believes that transparency with our clients extends to the tools we use in our practice. This statement explains how our firm uses artificial intelligence, and the safeguards we apply to protect our clients’ interests, confidentiality, and legal privilege.
How we use AI
Proust Legal uses artificial intelligence, including generative AI, as a support tool for our legal practice. These technologies help us work more efficiently across tasks such as legal research, the drafting of documents and correspondence, the analysis of large volumes of information, and administrative and organizational work. AI allows us to spend more time on the strategic thinking, judgment, and personal attention that each client’s matter deserves, while routine and time-consuming tasks are handled with greater speed and consistency.
AI is used as an aid to our legal work, never as a substitute for it. Every output produced with the assistance of AI, whether a piece of legal research, a draft document, an analysis, or any other work product, is reviewed, verified, and approved by a qualified lawyer before it is relied upon or shared with a client. Proust Legal remains fully responsible for the legal advice it provides and for the quality and accuracy of our work, in the same way we are responsible for work prepared with the help of any other tool.
Confidentiality and professional secrecy
Confidentiality is at the core of the lawyer-client relationship, and our use of AI is designed to protect it. Proust Legal takes care that any use of AI tools preserves the confidentiality of client data and of any proprietary or sensitive information entrusted to us. We apply the same duty of professional secrecy to our use of AI as we do to every other aspect of our practice, in accordance with the rules of professional conduct that govern the legal profession, including the applicable Bar rules on confidentiality and legal privilege.
We select, configure, and use AI tools with these obligations in mind, and we exercise professional judgment when deciding what information, if any, may be processed through such tools in connection with a given matter.
Compliance and best practices
Proust Legal’s use of AI is carried out in compliance with applicable data protection legislation, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and, where applicable, the EU Artificial Intelligence Act, as well as the ethical obligations that apply to our profession. We monitor developments in this fast-moving area and adapt our practices, tools, and internal guidance to reflect current legal requirements and industry best practices.
